Water Safety Skills Development- Water is considered the elixir of life. But, sometimes, water can also snatch a life in the blink of an eye. According to the latest report on Drowning Prevention in Sri Lanka, the Western province had the highest number of drowning deaths of 168, from 2016 to 2018. Therefore, the Gammadda V-Force and Asia Pacific Alliance for Disaster Management (A-PAD) Sri Lanka in partnership with Sri Lanka Life Saving provided a Water Safety Skill Development Program for beginner level youth volunteers of Gammadda V-Force. This program was aimed at familiarizing and exposing youth to open water sources in Sri Lanka and providing them the confidence and techniques to water survival. All participants received an internationally recognized certificate in Basic Rescue. The participants were then appointed as networking members within their geographical boundaries pre, during and post disasters, in connecting with media, A-PAD rescue teams, military and other active stakeholders. Two workshops were held in January and February 2020.
